Paramedics, police, firefighters and the water safety unit were called to East Hill, near the former Liquid and Envy nightclub, on Sunday at 9.35am.

The road was cordoned off between the Star Inn and the corner of Mace Lane.

Divers entered the stream and the body was retrieved just after 10.30am.

A police cordon remained in the area until later that day, and forensics searched the car park near the river, as well as the river bank.

North Park, which is on the opposite side of Mace Lane, was also cordoned off by police for a short time.

Kent Police say the 50-year-old man's death is not being treated as suspicious and that their "officers continue to make inquiries to establish what happened."

They added that a report is being compiled for the coroner.

Tributes for the man have also appeared on Facebook.

One reads: "A friend to many and a family friend for many years. A kind hearted man who did no wrong to anyone. He'll be missed by many."

Another said: "Rip to a kind gentle man who was a nice guy.

"He has touched so many lives over the years and will be greatly missed by a lot of people, so sad but have lovely memories."
