A man arrested for driving the wrong way in the outside lane of a motorway remains in hospital following a crash which left two others injured.

The accident happened between junction 10 and junction 11 on the M20 London-bound, shortly after midday on Thursday, April 7, three miles from the Hythe exit.

Other motorists described the "heart-in-mouth" moment of having to swerve out of the way of a driver in a black Seat Ibiza car.

The driver allegedly careered into an oncoming car, causing injuries to the man driving and "severe" injuries to a woman in the passenger side.

The 25-year-old woman had to be cut free by the fire brigade. She remains in a stable condition at Kings College Hospital in London.

The man driving in her car has now been discharged from the William Harvey Hospital.

The crash caused hours of tailbacks as the emergency services closed the motorway in both directions to clear up the crash and the wreckage of both cars.

The road only began to reopen four hours after the crash, causing delays on diversion routes such as the M2 and A2, and the A20.

Kent Police spokeswoman Scarlet Jones said the 35-year-old driver in hospital will be taken into custody when he is ready to be released.
