Leon Camier produced an excellent performance in his first-ever FIM Superbike World Championship race in Russia at the weekend.

The FIXI Crescent Suzuki rider, from Ashford, finished fifth and 15th in the 11th round of the championship at the Moscow International Raceway despite a spectacular 200km per hour practice crash when France's Loris Baz high-sided in front of him, launching him down the start-finish straight.

Camier, with nothing more than bruising to his hip, put the accident behind him and grabbed his fifth place in race two after starting from 18th on the grid.

He finished 15th in race one after a gamble to use wet tyres in the changeable weather didn't pay off and he was forced to change to slicks when the track dried out.

He said: "Happily there were no difficult tyre choices to make for race two as the track was dry and the sun was out.

"I made a reasonably good start and then rode very aggressively, passing people on the outside as well as the inside. At the end my body was hurting and it was getting hard to concentrate, but I was pretty happy to take fifth place."
