Firefighters had a change of pace last night from blazes and car crashes when they rescued a young boy who had become trapped in his push bike.
Ashford’s blue watch were called to Orion Way, in Willesborough at around 6pm to a report that a 7-year-old boy had got his left ankle stuck between the frame of his bike and the pedal.
It is believed that the boy had been out for a cycle ride with his friends when his leg got trapped.
People passing by tried to help the young lad out of the sticky spot, but when this proved impossible they called 999.
Watch manager Jim Smart said: “What had happened is that his leg had got stuck between the pedal arm and the frame. It was his left leg, just above the ankle. He was in a bit of pain and it was very tight.
“The pedal was pointing backwards so there wasn’t much room between the frame and the arm (of the pedal).”
Firefighters tried to prise the pedal away from bike's frame, but as it was made of solid metal it wouldn't bend it.
Watch manager Smart continued: “In the end we used a hack saw to cut through the metal. We did have hydraulic cutting equipment with us, but it was a bit delicate so used the saw instead. The bike wasn’t too damaged; the only thing that will need replacing is the pedal.”
Although the boy’s leg wasn’t bleeding, an ambulance was called so that he could be checked over.
And as the young lad was so brave, the firefighters have invited him down to the station for a special visit.
“These sort of call outs do make you think a bit more,” the watch manager added. “Before we were called out we had been doing RTC training and had been cutting cars apart. It makes it more interesting when you have to attend a smaller vehicle though, like a push bike.”
