A candle tribute from Ashford to London has been proposed in a show of support for family of Sarah Everard after human remains were discovered near the town.

Stephanie Staunton, who lives nearby, is organising the poignant tribute to the 33-year-old, who was last seen on March 3 in Clapham.

She's asking people to light a candle in their window from Ashford to Brixton next Wednesday at 9pm, to "light Sarah's way home".

Miss Staunton said: "My dad was a missing person for a year and Sarah's case reminded me of just how devastating that period of time was for me.

"Thankfully I got answers and he's alive, but I can't imagine how Sarah's family must be feeling at the moment.

"I thought the candle trail would be a good way of reflecting on her death, on how we can keep safe, and also show her family that the people of Ashford and Kent care for them and want to support them."

The 32-year-old noted that some of her friends in London knew Sarah, and described her as a "beautiful soul."

As she lived nearby, she offered to lay flowers for the friends who could not easily reach the site - an offer which many took her up on.

The celebrity manicurist and mental health campaigner also hopes the candle trail will highlight the fear women face in daily life, and prompt change.

She said: "I know a lot of people who, like myself, didn't personally know her but it has struck a chord with us.

"My friends and I have all felt that fear when walking alone at night.

"You keep your keys in your hand, stay in lit areas and call someone when you get home safely - it's part of our everyday lives.

"We should just be able to stick in our earphones and not be afraid, it's truly terrible how ingrained these safety measures are."

Her feelings have been echoed by people across the nation in the wake of Sarah's disappearance.

A 'Reclaim These Streets' vigil is being held at the bandstand in Clapham Common on Saturday at 6pm.

Organisers are demanding London's streets be safe for women "regardless of what you wear, where you live or what time of day or night it is.

“We shouldn’t have to wear bright colours when we walk home and clutch our keys in our fists to feel safe.

"It’s wrong that the response to violence against women requires women to behave differently.

"In Clapham, police told women not to go out at night this week. Women are not the problem."

Police are currently questioning PC Wayne Couzens who lives on Freeman's Way in Deal, after he was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, murder and a separate case of indecent exposure.

Officers were seen removing two cars from the property, and were believed to have been digging up his garden.
