Kent Eurotunnel passengers have been facing delays of more than three hours after a fire in the Channel Tunnel this morning.

Kent Fire and Rescue said a blaze broke out on a works train in the Kent-stretch of the tunnel at around 5.30am.

The driver was evacuated, but was not injured. Firefighters, who were called when an alarm went off in the tunnel, quickly extinguished the blaze.

However, it has led to an inspection of the tunnel today - leaving passengers from Kent facing lengthy delays.

A Eurotunnel spokesman said the alarm was set off by smoke and the tunnel was cleared and the inspection completed by around 7.30am. Staff were working to clear the passenger backlog, he added.

Services from Folkestone to France were delayed by up to three-and-a-half hours by mid-morning.
