A church which was converted into seven “quirky” flats has hit the market for £1.7 million.

Grade II-listed Apsley House, in Chart Road, Ashford, was home to The Redeemed Christian Church of God, but the group was kicked out after planning permission for the transformation was granted in 2017.

It has since moved into the former RBS unit in New Rents.

Now, their former meeting place is up for sale as one lot.

Estate agents Andrew and Co said: “This is a ready-made investment opportunity, perfectly positioned with amenities close by, including the town centre which is within a short walk.

“Apsley House is a stunning Grade II-listed listed building presenting a collection of seven apartments, split across two floors with four enjoying their own private entrance.

“Each apartment is quirky and individual, with some enjoying vaulted ceilings.”

There are four two-beds, two one-beds and one “very impressive” three-bedroom flat.

All of the homes have allocated parking.

The site was built in 1841 and originally served as St Mary's School.

In 1904, the mixed educational facility catered for more than 550 students and infants, and housed an on-site headmaster's lodge.

Whoever snaps up the site is thought to gain £98,490 a year in rent payments.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God Ashford branch, which was founded in 2008, searched for a home for years, and moved several times.

At the time of their eviction, the pastor commented: “It's a big problem for us.

“We're definitely not happy because we've been thrown out without any provisions being put in place for us beforehand.”

While looking for a new home, the congregation temporarily met at the Ashford International Hotel.

A year later, church leaders applied to Ashford Borough Council to move to a unit on the Bridge Road Business Centre, but the application was refused.

They have since made the former bank their home, opening just before Christmas.

Co-pastor Titi Oloruntoba said: “It is amazing to be open and we cannot thank God enough. It has been a journey but finally, we have a place to settle.”
