A new town centre car park has been opened, offering an extra 99 spaces to visitors.

Ashford Borough Council has unveiled its Victoria Road Car Park, sited just over the train tracks from its Elwick Place leisure complex.

Despite opening on Monday, the Victoria Road Car Park is empty

The new addition means the town now has 10 car parks within 10 minutes' walk of the High Street.

Featuring five disabled spaces, the facility will be open 24 hours a day with an hourly rate of £1.10. Staying over four hours will cost £5.

Victoria Road's car park comes ahead of council plans to overhaul the town centre, a project which will see construction on the existing Vicarage Lane facility.

This loss will be compensated for by the creation of a multi-storey structure nearby on Station Road.

The site is located opposite Quinn Estates' 272-home Riverside Park development, which will form part of a larger housing development around the Victoria Road and Beaver Road junction.

Work on the first block of apartments has nearly been completed, however the scheme's second phase has yet to be started.
"This will see the long and busy Victoria Road lined with housing and landscaped public spaces.
