There were heavy delays on the M20 following a two-vehicle crash and oil spillage on the first day of Operation Brock.

Drivers heading on the London-bound route between Junction 9 for Ashford and Junction 8 for Leeds Castle were brought to a halt this morning.

It came after a HGV broke down earlier on, causing heavy delays on the carriageway.

The lorry was recovered but a crash on the same route involving a campervan and a lorry caused further delays, leaving drivers stuck in eight-mile queues stretching back to Junction 10.

National Highways said the vehicles were “heavily damaged” in the collision, which caused a diesel spillage.

The carriageway reopened just after 1pm - four hours after police were first called.

Fire crews and paramedics were also called at a similar time but were both stood down before their arrival.

Last night, the controversial Operation Brock contraflow was redeployed on the M20 ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.

The leader of Kent County Council has voiced his disquiet over the reliance on the system, which sees drivers restricted to narrow lanes and a 50mph limit.
