Fire crews are making progress in extinguishing a haystack fire the day after the blaze began.

About 100 hay bales caught fire alongside the junction of the A251 and Shottenden Road yesterday afternoon, forcing the closure of the A-road.

Fire crews remained at the site near Challock overnight, with water still being used to put out the flames.

This picture, taken yesterday, shows about 100 hay bales ablaze next to the junction of the A251 and Shottenden Road

One fire engine remains at the scene and crews are extinguishing any remaining hot spots with a drag rake and hose reel jets.

The road has since reopened, but eyewitnesses have reported that they "had to drive through the smoke".
