An eye-catching poppy tribute inspired by the popular installation at the Tower of London will open in a park near Ashford town centre.

As part of the borough council's commemoration of the First World War ceasefire, North Park will be flooded with the iconic red flowers on Remembrance Sunday on November 11.

Inspired by a similar installation called 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' at the Tower of London in 2014, the sturdy sculptures will be installed next to the Civic Centre.

They will be on display throughout Remembrance Sunday and will receive a military guard of honour overnight, before organisers begin to take them down on Monday, November 12.

In advance of the event, residents are being offered the opportunity to purchase the sculptured metal poppies before they are ‘planted’.

They cost £6 each and a percentage of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to a charity working to support the armed forces community.

After the event, organisers will invite residents to collect their poppy to keep as a souvenir.

Up to five poppies can be purchased in any transaction, but organisers say once all 3,000 poppies are sold, no more will be available.

When darkness falls on Remembrance Sunday, a new civic beacon will also be lit in North Park.
