A farmer was forced to call the fire brigade after a mechanical failure on his combine harvester caused it catch fire.

Two engines from Ashford and Tenterden were sent to Appledore Road in the village of Kenardington at 6.30pm yesterday.

Ashford crew manager Tim Hanley said the Claas combine harvester was well alight by the time his crew arrived.

The farmer had also ploughed a fire break around the machine in order to stop the flames spreading to the surrounding crops, which were being harvested.

The firefighters removed the grain before using a compressed air foam system to bring the fire under control and douse the flames. They left the scene shortly after 9pm.
