Hail storms and flurries of snow have hit parts of Kent as sunny weather on Easter Sunday and last week's sizzling temperatures become a distant memory.

People have reported seeing small showers of the white stuff in Ashford, Folkestone and Faversham.

Last week, patches of the UK hit near historic March temperatures in a mini-heatwave but tonight Kent's team of gritters will be out in force protecting the county's road surfaces.

Forecasters predicted the sunny spell wasn't to last, with temperatures dropping over the Easter weekend, and bottoming-out today, with warnings of snow in some parts of Kent.

There was a hail storm in Ashford earlier this morning with sleet on and off. Faversham has also seen hail and a light flurry was seen in the Cheriton area in Folkestone.

The Met Office predicts London and south east England today will be occasionally cloudy with patchy rain turning to sleet or snow for a time.

The weather will then turn dry and largely sunny, though feeling bitterly cold in the brisk wind. Temperatures will reach a maximum of 7C.

The cold is expected to stay tonight with a widespread frost developing around midnight.

Road surface temperatures are expected to hit freezing and gritting lorries will be heading out at about 10pm.

The wintry snap has led to a warning for motorists heading to work or taking children to school to be careful first thing on Tuesday.

KCC Highways has warned people to be aware of icy patches particularly on untreated roads and to expect surfaces to be slippery.

Drivers are advised to take extra caution and drive according to the conditions by avoiding harsh acceleration, braking and steering.

Tomorrow there will be sunny spells but a chance of snow showers during the afternoon, accompanied by strong winds.
