An “inspiring” and “brave” teenager who has been battling cancer for two years is now receiving palliative care at home.

Oli Ross, from Ashford, was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2021, but sadly the cancer has now spread.

Then 15, he had a 10-hour urgent operation to reduce the size of the tumour, with 75% of it removed successfully.

However, after biopsies were done on the mass, it was discovered to be high-grade, aggressive and incurable.

Doctors told Oli, now 17, and his family that he would need overseas treatment to have the best chance of survival.

Family friend, Zoe Hopkins, set up a fundraising page to support the family and get the care for Oli.

He received treatment in Germany but, unfortunately, it was found to be no longer working a few months ago.

Claire Ross-Duffield, Oli’s mum, says her son has been an inspiration over the past two years.

She said: “Oli has fought the biggest of battles for someone so young, and always with a smile on his face and the wittiest of humour.

“He has taught us all so much about life and living every day to the fullest and not sweating the small stuff.

“We couldn't be prouder of him and his bravery will inspire us all for the rest of our lives.”

The family have been documenting Oli’s journey on Facebook via a page named ‘Oli’s fight against Jerry’.

It has 2,400 likes and 3,300 followers.

In June this year, another GoFundMe page was set up in a bid to raise money for Oli to complete a bucket list. So far it has raised £3,035.

This has given Oli, who is an avid foodie, the opportunity to visit the Shard, the Ritz, the Savoy and drive in sports cars.

He has also been able to meet celebrities including chef Heston Blumenthal, who he has followed for most of his teenage years.

The TV star, who is known for delighting diners with innovative dishes such as snail porridge, flew from France to meet Oli and his family at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London.

The fundraiser states: “As everyone knows we are no longer needing to fundraise for Oli’s medical treatment to treat his terminal brain tumour as the treatment in Germany is no longer working.

“So, we now would like to raise some funds to enable our dear Oli to do some fun things with his family over the next few months to create long-lasting happy memories.

“I have decided to set this new Go Fund Me up to make this possible.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has followed Oli’s journey so far and we hope you continue to do so.”

But now, Oli is at home receiving palliative care after his tumour spread to both sides of his brain, his brain stem and the ventricles within his brain.

Oli’s mum Claire says now the priority is keeping her son comfortable.

“His bucket list has gone from activities and treatments to anything to keep him comfortable and anything he fancies,” she says.

“He is still eating well so we have had lovely meals for him from his favourite restaurants like Nobu and The Cave.”
