An HGV fuel spillage in roadworks on the M20 caused miles of tailbacks.

Drivers say four miles of traffic was queuing between junctions 9 and 8 after a lorry hit a temporary works barrier just after 1pm.

The incident, which caused a single lane closure, occurred on the M20 London-bound carriageway.

Highways England has introduced the roadworks on the stretch as it is working on a temporary solution to help avoid the need to activate Operation Stack on the M20.

The works, costing £25 million, will allow for two-way travel on the London-bound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9 from March 2019 at periods of extraordinary cross-Channel disruption.

Narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place while construction is carried out. Work began in July.

All lanes have since re-opened, but a 15 minute delay is still to be expected by drivers.
