Highworth Grammar School for Girls is set to reopen tomorrow.

The secondary school, which is located in Quantock Drive, had to be closed today due to severe flooding.

A burst water pipe caused the ceilings to collapse in three of the maths classrooms due to the weight of the water as well as causing damage to several rooms in the older central building which will now need 'major repair work'.

The leak, which was discovered early yesterday morning, caused 'extensive flooding' and meant that heating and electricity were unavailable so the decision was made to close the school.

Contractors have been working hard throughout the day so that the grammar school, which remained open during the bad weather last week, could be open as soon as possible.

Leigh-Ann Perrian, assistant headteacher, said: "Contractors worked hard to ensure that the school could reopen.

"The damage has been assessed and the site has been made safe to allow students and staff to return as quickly as possible.

"Staff and students are due back in lessons tomorrow but it will take some time to repair all of the damage completely.

"Highworth would like to thank everyone who helped to get the school up and running again."

The water issue at Highworth School is just one of thousands across the South East, with South East Water urgently trying to reverse damage done by the bad weather.

Residents across Ashford, including in Charing, Kennington, South Ashford, Stanhope and the town centre, have reported water shortages and low pressure.

It is believed that the bad weather and thaw have caused major leaks across the water mains.

People are now being urged to reduce water demand, by not using water during peak times and only for the essentials, as the leaks and bursts are fixed.
