Drivers say a stretch of "horrendous" potholes could lead to a multi-vehicle collision due to how dangerous they are.

'Slow' road signs have appeared at the pedestrian crossing in Brookfield Road, Ashford after the deep caverns and ruts in the surface appeared forcing drivers to avoid them.

But motorists say an accident is looming after the signs appeared as unaware drivers don't know quite how bad the potholes are until venturing over them and could veer across the road.

"The potholes along Beaver Road, just past the Matalan left hand turn are horrendous," one driver told KentOnline.

"There isn't any way of getting across them without hitting at least one deep dip or hole.

"There is also the added danger that drivers are aware they are there and now slow down, and in some cases stop before the pothole area which leaves vehicles either left in a turning area or worse, within a multi-car accident."

The problem has been bad along this part of the road for several months, drivers say.

"I do not understand how the council has let it get this bad," they said.

"They must have had complaints from motorists where their cars have been damaged.

"We are just lucky there hasn't been a serious accident there."

Another driver says before the slow signs were put up near the potholes, a collision could have easily happened along the route.

"Before the signs went up, someone slammed their brakes on in front of me when they saw the potholes," they said.

"It is very bad, it could damage someone's car.

"The road has been bad for a few months now and I do not know why it has taken so long to be fixed.

"The bad weather recently hasn't helped as the potholes get filled with rainwater so drivers cannot tell how deep they are."

A spokesman for Kent County Council said work planned for Brookfield Road is due to start on Sunday, March 19.

“In order to reduce disruption as far as possible, the work will be carried out between 7am and 7pm on the same day," they said.

“The road will not be closed during the works but we have put out ‘slow’ warning signage in advance of them beginning.”

Nasty potholes have also been spotted by motorists in Chart Road near the tank roundabout and further along the A28 by Brunswick Road junction on the Cobbs Wood industrial estate.

"To avoid damaging my car, I try to steer away from them and goodness knows what sort of damage is being caused to the wheels and suspension when I can't," said a Singleton resident who uses the route daily.

"If you forget and miss them or can't avoid them because of other traffic there's an almighty bang which shudders through the wheels.

"The condition of the roads is getting worse and worse."

They added KCC is aware of reports of surface defects at Chart Road.

"Highway stewards have inspected the road regularly and found that this is delamination of the surface and not potholes, meaning that they do not require essential safety critical repairs," a KCC spokesperson said.

"We will continue to monitor this location regularly for further deterioration as KCC concentrates its resources on urgent safety critical repairs."
