A petition is calling for signs to be placed on the busy “Tank” roundabout in Ashford clarifying which lane drivers should use.
The online petition was launched last month and so far has more than 120 signatures.
It was set up by an anonymous campaigner, who posted on ipetition.com: “It has become clear that people don’t know which lane to use, when approaching the roundabout on Templer Way and exiting on Chart Road.
“This is classed as an ‘intermediate’ exit in the Highway Code, which states the appropriate lane should be used.
“It would appear that people have differing opinions on which lane is appropriate and some clarity is needed.”
The petition asks for people to sign it “with the understanding that the right hand lane should be used to turn off the third exit on to Chart road” and “the left lane should be used for turning left or taking the second exit”.
It calls for action to be taken and “for the display of clear signage and/or correct signage to show this”.
One comment on the petition states: “It’s ludicrous. Design is unclear to non-local traffic as well as local traffic.
“My very cautious mum has had several experiences of being threatened by other drivers, for following the rules." - campaigner
“And as a lot of very large foreign lorries use it to access the town and surrounding rural areas, it’s surprising so far no one has been hurt or killed.
“My very cautious mum has had several experiences of being threatened by other drivers, for following the rules.
“Better instructions, lane markings and signs would be a start.”
It appears that the campaign was started by the same person who set up the Facebook group Ashford “Tank roundabout” Ashford, which has 600 followers.
The group claims that the roundabout, named after the armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) that sits on top, is the scene of the “worst driving that can be seen!”.
During rush hour, traffic around the roundabout, which has five exits, is often at a standstill.
Confusion seems to stem over which lane is the one that drivers should use when heading towards Singleton or Tenterden, and as Templer Way is a dual carriageway, drivers often use both lanes when heading towards Chart Road.
One of the other problems drivers encounter is a lack of lane discipline when it comes to using the roundabout.
Drivers using both the left and right hand lanes when turning into Chart Road towards Tenterden often cut each other up when trying to merge into one lane.
In May 2013, KCC Highways traffic engineer Steve Darling said that the Highway Code advises that drivers should use either lane.
He said: “The exit to the A28 towards Tenterden is an intermediate exit from the roundabout, because the final exit is to the TA Centre.
“As such, the Highway Code advises that drivers may use either lane, in order to head towards Tenterden.
“Drivers should however allow room for, and pay all due care and attention to, other vehicles on the roundabout.”
