A long-serving pub landlord is stepping down after 25 years so he can concentrate on running a coffee shop.

Howard Lapish rebuilt The Hooden Smokehouse and Grill in Willesborough Lees, Ashford, following a devastating fire in 2016.

But he is now looking for someone to take on the site's lease, which has 14 years still to run, as he wants to dedicate more time to his Wye Coffee Shop and Kitchen business.

Mr Lapish is yet to confirm exactly when he will leave the 17th century building but says he will hand over the keys in 2024.

The 2016 fire gutted the Silver Hill Road property after flames spread from the kitchen to the timbers of the Grade-II listed pub.

The site was closed for 18 months but reopened with its current name following an extensive rebuild.

"I’m ready to call time for the last time," Mr Lapish said.

"I run the coffee shop in Wye with my wife and at this stage in our lives want to focus on one business only.

"When the time comes, we will have a farewell party for regulars to say thank you for all their support over the years and to raise a toast to the new landlord or landlady, whoever that is.

"I hope they will enjoy running the pub as much as I have."

Mr Lapish was a regular at the pub, which is owned by Star Pubs and Bars, before taking charge.

He says a chance conversation with the publican of another Ashford pub led to him taking up the landlord position.

“They thought my management experience and people skills would make me ideally suited,” Mr Lapish added.

“I hadn’t thought of a career in hospitality before but have loved it. It was the pub and customers that won me over.

“It’s a proper lovely olde worlde pub with beams and lots of character. It’s always had a great atmosphere.

“The clientele were and are lovely and there has never been any trouble.

“It proved to be a great move and led to me meeting my wife who worked at the pub.

“I’m a proper old-fashioned landlord, who stands at the bar talking to customers. I’ve had some fantastic conversations with many interesting people over the years.”

Bosses at Star Pubs and Bars have recognised Mr Lapish’s work with a long-service award.

Luke Cherrington, the company’s business development manager, said: “Howard has witnessed a lot of change and challenges over the years, from the smoking ban and a fire to Covid.

“In spite of these, his focus on improving his offer and giving customers a great time has never wavered.

“It’s a privilege to give him this award, thank him for his support on behalf of the community and to wish him many happy years ahead serving coffee rather than pulling pints when he makes the move.”
