A new fitness concept born in Ashford is set to launch next month.

‘Timba’, a new body training technique, uses unique sticks to increase strength endurance, with low and high intensity cardio and fun partner exercises.

William Head, from Aldington, used to be a physical training instructor in the army and has drawn on his life experience to produce the concept.

He said: “I went back to my roots.

“Quite often we would not have access to any gym equipment, especially if we were away from base, so we would improvise with whatever kit was available.

“So using those experiences and my knowledge of martial arts, I wanted to create a fun, effective exercise concept that didn’t require benches, weights, medicine balls or kettlebells and steer away from the run-of-the-mill aerobic, cardio based classes that sit in every town.

“Most of these fitness concepts are American. This one is from Ashford.

“We have been building up to this for about 11 months.”

The stick is first used vertically to support the body as 'an aid to practicing perfect form', and once that movement is performed correctly and comfortably, resistance is increased by holding the stick horizontally.

The concept has also been supported by Invicta Chamber and Mr Head is hoping to branch out across Kent.

The trials so far have had positive feedback.

It is described as good for toning and also has a high calorie burning effect.

Timba will be launching the first class at The North School on Friday, August 11 at 6.30pm.

The classes will take place every Friday evening from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
