Mystery surrounds a single-car crash that left two men in hospital – one fighting for his life.

Police were first called to Wellesley Road, near Ashford town centre, after reports a silver BMW had crashed into a lamppost on Easter Sunday afternoon.

The driver and passenger were both injured, but were treated by paramedics in Crownfield Road – more than two miles away.

SECAmb and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were called to the second location in South Ashford where the air ambulance landed 400 metres away in Victoria Park.

The passenger, a man in his 40s, was driven to Kings College Hospital, in London, with serious head injuries, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The car driver, a 26-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Police said he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, but he has been released without charge.

One man who witnessed the incident from his flat near Wellesley Road, but asked not to be named, said he saw the car smash into the lamppost and a wall.

He said the driver then got out, picked up parts of his car that had broken off and quickly drove away.

Moments later, other witness said the car was then spotted in a driveway in Crownfield Road, before a man was carried out of a house on a stretcher.

Police said an investigation was ongoing and declined to comment any further.
