A determined teenager sat an A-level exam from her hospital bed - the day after suffering horrific leg injuries in a moped crash.

Hannah Gilbert, of St Mary's Bay, on Romney Marsh, suffered a leg cut that went down to the bone and might not be able to walk for months.

The 17-year-old's family are now appealing for witnesses to the smash.

Her mother Cheryl Gilbert said: "Hannah is an extremely motivated girl and wants to go to university and become a teacher. But now her life has been put on hold.

"We need witnesses so we can completely establish what happened."

Hannah was in a crash with a car on the A259 Prospect Road, outside Aldi in Hythe, at 9.15am on Tuesday, May 21.

She had been travelling towards Folkestone to attend Pent Valley Technology College and the car, driven by an elderly woman, had been going in the opposite direction.

The collision caused a deep cut to her right leg as well as serious bruising.

Hannah was taken to the William Harvey Hospital, in Ashford, only returning home last Monday.

She insisted on taking an A-level psychology exam at the hospital and continues to study for a second paper for the subject for next Wednesday.

The teenager is now in a leg brace and cannot walk more than a few steps.

Hannah is studying both childcare and psychology for her A-levels and aims to go to Canterbury Christ Church University to read childhood studies for two years and primary teaching for another two.

She said: "Luckily most of my childcare work was done before the accident. But the psychology exam I took in hospital makes up 30% of my grade and the exam next week is 70%.

"It is difficult to keep studying at the same level because I am in pain and the codeine I am taking is making me have to sleep so much."
