A stretch of motorway has reopened following an earlier fuel spillage.

The M20 was shut eastbound between Junction 8 at Maidstone and Junction 9 at Ashford just after 1pm today (November 23).

Traffic was backing up along the coastbound M20 after a fuel spillage between J8 (Maidstone) and J9 (Ashford). Picture: National Highways

Drivers were being warned to expect delays while work was carried out to treat the spill, which resulted from an earlier crash.

Queues of traffic were backing up on the approach to the junction and a diversion was in place via the A20.

However, by 5pm the carriageway had reopened and there was only one mile of congestion remaining.
