A warning has been issued after an out of control bonfire spread and set a van alight.

Firefighters were called at 2.55pm this afternoon following reports of a blaze in a field off Maidstone Road, in Hothfield near Ashford.

KFRS is advising people to avoid having bonfires following the Hothfield blaze

When they arrived crews discovered a van was well alight, with the fire believed to have spread from a nearby out of control bonfire.

Crews used jets and drag rakes to tackle the blaze for 90 minutes and there were no reported injuries.

Following the incident, firefighters are now reminding people of the current advice to avoid having bonfires all together.

A spokesman said: "However, if you do choose to have an outdoor fire, ensure you follow some simple tips to stay safe.

"Build your bonfire well away from, and clear of, foliage, grass, buildings, garden sheds, fences, hedges and overhanging branches.

" Never leave bonfires unattended

"Keep it to a manageable size and evenly built, so that it collapses inwards as it burns."
