Controversial plans to replace a village's long-standing garage with 10 homes have been withdrawn.

Andrews Garage in Smeeth was earmarked for demolition in May when K & M Development Ltd revealed plans to flatten it.

But concerned residents are now breathing a sigh of relief after the plans were withdrawn.

Ten homes were proposed, as well as light industrial units at the rear of the site in Plain Road.

Brabourne parish council clerk Susan Wood welcomed the withdrawal of the scheme.

"Residents are relieved but are waiting to see what will happen," she said.

"They assume an amended planning application will be submitted shortly.

"People were not particularly happy about the buildings' design, and feared that if they accepted the application it would open up the green spaces around it to even more development."

Andrews Garage ceased trading in 2016 following a downturn in trading.

In its planning application, K&M Development said the homes were needed in the area.

They said: "Both the housing and the light industrial units would be served by an improved road and footpath access.

"The proposal includes five light industrial units of between 100 and 155 square metres which will suit the needs of small and medium size businesses including start-ups."

The plans were withdrawn at the applicant's request in July, and it is not yet known if the scheme will be resubmitted.
