A FRESH clampdown on speeding drivers in Ashford town centre has caught more than 200 motorists. Operation Neptune Plus, which has been running since November 5, was set up to combat the drivers who use the town's ring road and connecting dual carriageways as a race track.

During a seven-day period 206 drivers were caught breaking the speed limit around the town. Police clocked one driver who reached 63mph in a 30mph zone. The initiative is a partnership between Weald Police, Ashford council, Kent Fire Brigade and Kent County Council.

The majority of drivers stopped were given the option of being reported for summons or sent on an educational evening. One hundred people chose to attend one of three evenings held at Ashford Fire Station.
