A town centre road was shut off following an incident at a block of flats.

Police closed Tufton Street in Ashford, between the junctions for Bank Street and Church Road, amid concern for the welfare of a man.

Four ambulances and numerous police cars, including an unmarked Volvo, were called to the scene.

The manned vehicle barrier in Bank Street, which remains closed in office hours, was initially opened to allow drivers to use the high street as a diversion.

Police later closed Bank Street altogether, with officers manning a cordon at the junction with Elwick Road.

But all restrictions were lifted at about 3.45pm as police confirmed the man had been “safely located”.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service added: “We responded to concerns for the safety of a person and that ambulance crews attended the scene. The person was taken to hospital for checks.”
