More than one bicycle a day has been stolen from Ashford over the past month.

Following the serious spate of thefts, Kent Police is now urging cyclists to increase their cycle security.

In total, Ashford has experienced 37 thefts and burglaries in which bicycles were stolen in the last month.

Ninety-five per cent of these crimes occurred in urban areas, with the majority taking place in the town centre.

Sgt Alison Oates, from Ashford’s Community Safety Unit, said: “We strongly advise people to register their property on Immobilise - a website which allows people to register a variety of items including mobile phones, electronic gadgets and bicycles for free.

"This assists the police in reuniting owners with stolen property when it is recovered.

“Remember, bicycles can be stolen from anywhere so wherever you keep your bike ensure it is secure.

"Purchasing a good quality lock such as a ‘D lock’ can deter thieves from attempting to steal pedal cycles.

"If storing your bike in a garage, shed or outbuilding make sure this is also properly secured.

"Remember, buying a lock is much cheaper than having to buy a new bike."
