Ashford man charged after police officer assaulted in Elwick Road during England World Cup game patrols

A police officer suffered a head injury when he was assaulted while on patrol during the England World Cup game yesterday.

He was speaking with a man in Elwick Road, Ashford, when he was attacked by another man.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon in Elwick Road

The officer suffered a head injury and was treated by a police medic.

Mark Lewis, of Church Road, Ashford, has since been charged with assaulting an emergency worker.

The 54-year-old was bailed to appear before Folkestone Magistrates' Court on Monday, December 21.

The police tweeted about the incident stating the team has increased patrols during the football.

The tweet read: "An incident in Elwick Place resulting in the assault of our officer, resulted in the suspect being charged to court for assault on an emergency worker.

A man from Church Road has been charged for assaulting an emergency worker

"We have increased patrols during the football tournament to ensure everyone stays safe."
