Officers have launched an investigation following reports a group of youths “fired a catapult” at a seagull and “beat” it to death.

The dead bird was found in the Stanhope area of Ashford yesterday afternoon by officers.

After identifying one boy, they were taken home to “face” their mother.

A police spokesman said: “A dead bird was found following reports of youths firing a catapult at a seagull and beating it in Stanhope this afternoon.

“One youth was identified and taken home to face his mother.

“We will not tolerate animal cruelty or the use of weapons.”

It comes after KentOnline reported yesterday that the county has seen the highest number of animals attacked with weapons over the past four years, according to the RSPCA.

Data released by the animal charity this week shows 56 reports of animals being attacked with weapons in the county between 2020 and May 2023, including two cats, belonging to the same owner, who were shot in the face.

Ashford has been plagued by the use of catapults for years, with shocking figures seeing it named the catapult crime capital of Kent back in 2019.

Police say the investigation into the dead seagull is ongoing.
