The foreign-registered car ended up under the HGV. The male driver and a female passenger were both trapped.

The woman was freed by police while firefighters from Folkestone and Dover cut the man out.

A spokesman for Folkestone fire station said: "We used our hydraulic equipment to cut the roof off the car and free the man.

"He was talking to us throughout. It was quite a difficult extraction which took about an hour because of where the car ended up."

The man was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

It is not known if the accident happened on the carriageway or in a layby.

There was debris on the road which was cleared by 12.30am.
