A busy road is set to close for almost two weeks while resurfacing work is carried out.

Bybrook Road in Kennington, Ashford will be shut from Wednesday, August 9 for 13 days while engineers from Kent Highways carry out the work.

It means the road will be blocked off from the A28 Canterbury Road to the junction for Nine Acres.

A 1.4-mile diversion route will be put in place taking drivers via Canterbury Road, Faversham Road and The Pasture before rejoining Bybrook Road and vice versa.

In a notice to residents, Kent Highways said: “During these essential works, it will be necessary to close the road completely so that we can carry out the works safely for both the workforce and road users.

“The direction of access and egress for vehicles into adjoining estates will be determined as work progresses along Bybrook Road

“There will be limited access/egress to properties along the road whilst works are in progress however there will be an on-site Traffic Management Team to direct traffic and allow movement of vehicles when safe to do so.

“We will remove the existing thin tarmac road surface by a method known as fine-milling and take the road back to concrete.

“The complete area will then be swept by a mechanical sweeper to ensure the concrete surface is clean and free of dust and debris.

“Following these preparation works, any defects in the concrete surface, such as cracks and joints, will be repaired using an inlaid buff-coloured joint sealant.

“If required, the existing manhole covers, and rainwater gully gratings will be adjusted or replaced to the correct level following the removal of the old tarmac surface.

“The final finished surface will be a fine-milled concrete road.”

Once work is complete, road markings will be repainted before the road is opened back up to traffic.

The authority added: “It is inevitable that residents and businesses near the works will experience some disruption and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused, but we will try to keep this to a minimum.

“Restricted access to residential properties and all businesses up to the closure point, will be available, when safe to do so, but if you have any access needs, please let the workforce on site know.

“Access to properties between the closure points will need to be restricted for a short period while work is carried out in front of each property and across road junctions.

“Traffic Management operatives will be available to help direct traffic within the closure.”

The works come just six months after 20mph speed limits were introduced along 40 roads in Kennington, including Bybrook Road, as part of a traffic calming scheme.

The "Twenty is Plenty" initiative was brought in to help drive out ‘rat-run’ motorists.

A raised zebra crossing in Bybrook Road near Grasmere Road was also introduced as part of the works but it had to be rebuilt after three months over concerns it was too high.

The whole project cost more than £30,000 and has seen new signs and road markings introduced.
