Bomb squad cordon off A28 Canterbury Road near Ashford's Conningbrook Hotel

A major road in Ashford was sealed off after a possible wartime munition was found in a field.

Police cordoned off part of the A28 next to the Conningbrook Hotel in Kennington to allow the bomb squad to assess the situation.

People were cleared from The Ridge playing field nearby after officers were called at 3.15pm yesterday.

But today police have confirmed the object found was a false alarm.

A spokeswoman said: "We were called at 3.15pm yesterday to a report of what was believed to be an unexploded wartime device found in a field in Canterbury Road, Kennington.

"Officers attended and put a cordon in place for experts from the explosive ordnance disposal unit who assessed the item.

"It was not deemed an explosive and the cordon was stood down at about 5pm."

The MOD has been approached for comment.
