Thoughtless parents on the school run are causing damage to headstones and graves in Willesborough Cemetery.

Complaints have been made to Ashford Borough Council about cars blocking the entrance to the cemetery, off Church Road, individuals being rude towards people visiting graves and damage within the cemetery grounds.

The fence and grass area have also been damaged due to vehicles parking on the site, and there are reports of a fragmented headstone.

Willesborough resident John Graham, who regularly visits the cemetery said: “Normally the cemetery is well kept, tidy and the majority of people park sensibly.

“However, recently cars have been parking inappropriately causing damage to the area; there were even tyre marks over one of the graves.

“I do appreciate that there is not a lot of room to park near the school, but please do spare a thought for those visiting the cemetery.”

Now, the council is urging parents picking up children from Willesborough Infant School, in Church Road, and Willesborough Junior School, in Highfield Road, to refrain from parking in the cemetery.

The plea has been echoed by the leaders of both schools.

Head of Willesborough Junior School, Jennie King said: “It’s very sad to see the damage in Willesborough Cemetery caused by vehicles.

"It is important this peaceful area of commemoration is treated with respect and dignity.

“We understand it may not be as convenient but we ask parents to find an alternative place to park when picking up their children from school.”

Temporary signage has now been installed at the entrance of Willesborough Cemetery to deter people from using the grounds as a car park and prevent further damage to the cemetery.

Portfolio holder for culture and the environment, Cllr Jessamy Blanford, said: “Cemeteries should be places of quiet reflection and respect. Mourners should not have to see damage to gravestones or be disturbed during private moments.

“We ask that parents collect their children from a different pick up point as a sign of respect to those visiting the cemetery.”
