A schoolboy has been arrested and suspended after setting off a fire extinguisher at his school.

The 15-year-old sprayed water from the device in a crowded corridor at Pent Valley Technology College, in Folkestone, covering some pupils and staff.

Police were called and the boy has been suspended from the secondary school.

Head teacher Mario Citro (pictured right) said: "Health and safety is our top priority. You cannot jeopardise a school's ability to put out a fire."

The boy had set off the device during a bustle of pupils and staff moving between lessons.

Police were called to the Surrenden Road school at 12.50pm on Monday and arrested him on suspicion of common assault and criminal damage.

He was issued with a final warning by officers - the third and highest form of caution leading to automatic prosecution if another offence is committed.

Mr Citro said: "It was apparently classed as assault because some members of staff got wet, but nobody was hurt. It was the same with the criminal damage but there was no more damage than a well-washed floor.

"Staff made sure the boy did not cause himself harm and the matter was dealt with very quickly."

Mr Citro said the teenager was this week kept off school and it was not yet known when he was returning, but his future was "being considered".

He said: "The pupil's situation is being reviewed."
