Police were called to a Kent railway station following reports of a man with a screwdriver.

Officers attended Ashford International after being alerted to the suspect carrying the tool.

A man was searched and a screwdriver was found, but no arrests were made.

British Transport Police (BTP) posted on X: “It’s not all about arresting people, we also do a lot of safeguarding.

“Tonight was a prime example when officers were called to Ashford for reports of a male with a screwdriver.

“Officers attended and a male was detained for a search. A screwdriver was located.

“The male had severe learning difficulties and officers looked after him and further safeguarded him by taking him home.”

BTP says officers made referrals to ensure the man “gets the help and support he requires”.

The screwdriver was seized and will be destroyed.

The night before, an off-duty police officer was reportedly kicked and punched by a man with an extendable baton at the same station.

He was arrested on suspicion of having an offensive weapon and assaulting an emergency service worker, and has since been bailed.
