A footballer is recovering from surgery after being left with a broken jaw following a late-night attack.

Sam Conlon, a striker for Hythe Town, was out with his twin brother Greg on Saturday night in Ashford when they were approached by two women who started arguing with them.

A man is then said to have punched Mr Conlon in the face, breaking his jaw.

He spent two days in hospital following the fight, which took place near the Auction Room bar in New Street.

He underwent surgery on Sunday and had to have his jaw wired on Monday before being discharged.

Police are now investigating the incident, which could leave the 23-year-old striker out of action for up to four months.

Speaking after the incident, Hythe manager Tim Dixon said: “Sam was beaten up and had his jaw fractured in three places. The police are looking at the CCTV but he’s out for three to four months.”

A police spokesman confirmed: “The incident took place at around 1am. It is reported that a 23-year-old man had been out for an evening with his brother.

“After leaving a pub two women approached the pair and, for reasons unknown to the victim, began arguing with him. Shortly after this it is reported a man punched the 23-year-old.”

The suspect is said to be white, aged between 35 and 40 years old, of stocky build and 5ft 10in tall.
