Liam Sutton ended his junior golf career in the best possible fashion with a hat-trick of impressive victories.

The 17-year-old plus two handicapper who lives at Boughton Leas near Ashford is a sixth form A level pupil at Simon Langton School in Canterbury, studying business, geography and biology.

A member at Etchinghill and Littlestone, he began by winning the St Andrews Boys’ Open title on the famous Old Course at the home of golf in Scotland, after a four hole play-off.

He followed that up with victory in the Littlestone Junior Open after another four-hole play-off, before being crowned Kent Junior champion two weeks later, beating Freddie Price, of Royal Blackheath, on the first extra hole at Chislehurst.

Reflecting on his success, Liam said: "We only went to St Andrews for a little break and the chance to play the course, so winning was a bonus, I backed myself to win at Littlestone and came from four down with three to play at Chislehurst."

Sutton finished top of a 150-strong international field over four days at St Andrews, winning on the fourth play-off hole to win the Merchants Cup – an event with past champions including European Tour pro Chris Wood.

He then won at Littlestone with a gross 66, five under par, before clinching the Kent title.

He came from four shots down with three to play but finished par-birdie-par to be joint leader with Price on six under par after rounds of 64 and 62, edging through to win the chance of representing the county in the Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, where he finished tied 12th.
