Police are appealing for information after high-value mountain bikes were reported stolen from two neighbouring garages on the same night.

Burglars broke into the two garages in Pembury Place, Ashford, on Sunday night.

Three mountain bikes were stolen from the first garage: a green Canyon bike; a blue Canyon bike and a black Diamond bike.

A pressure washer, a radio controlled car and a number of tools and mountain bike parts were also taken.

From the second garage, the intruders stole a customised orange and black Mondraker mountain bike.

Inspector Jason Atkinson of the Ashford Community Safety Unit said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area on Sunday night to contact us.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who has seen or been offered similar bikes for sale."

The Community Safety Unit is keen to promote bike security and is in the process of organising a bike marking event in the town centre in the New Year.

"In the meantime there are ways in which bike owners can protect their bikes," said Inspector Atkinson. "Always make sure bikes are kept securely in locked sheds or garages.

"Take a photo of them and make a note of their serial numbers so that if they are found we can easily reunite them with their rightful owners.

"Unfortunately bikes, especially specialist, high-value bikes like the ones stolen from Pembury Place, will always be a target for thieves.

"But taking a few simple steps can reduce your chances of being a victim of bike theft."
