Ashford Borough Council's borough election count is over and Conservatives retain control while Ukip gains one seat

The results are in and the Conservatives have retained control of Ashford Borough Council.

Inline with the national trend, blue was the dominant colour as results were announced and the Tories went from having 29 councillors to 34.

Labour dropped from five to four, the Lib Dems still have one, although a different one, the Ashford Independents have fallen from five to two and independents from two to one.

Ukip got its first elected seat when Beverley Murphy gained 812 votes to share Beaver ward with Labour's Jill Britcher, who got 817 votes.

Cllr Murphy told us she was surprised to get voted in but was "feeling positive" about getting started in her new role.

Talking of Ukip, Norman ward, which Harriet Yeo represented for Labour until she defected to the purple party earlier this year, was taken by Tory Jenny Webb.

Cllr Webb, who has never been a politician before, said she has already spoken to residents about the issues they feel are important and stood because she feels Norman ward has been "ignored for too long".

George Koowaree was elected for the Lib Dems in North Willesborough along with Jeremy Adby, who used to be a Lib Dem representing Victoria ward but stood this time as a Tory.

The were no major upsets and both main party leaders have kept their seats - council leader Tory Gerry Clarkson in Charing and Labour's Brendan Chilton in Stanhope.

One man looking pretty relaxed all night was Tory Cllr Mike Bennett, who was standing in the borough's only uncontested seat.

His position as the representative for Rolvenden and Tenterden West was guaranteed before voting even started.

Counting for the Ashford Borough Council election began in the Stour Centre at 3pm and the council predicted all the results would be in by 10pm.

There are 35 wards in the borough and with 27 of those single member wards and eight of them double member, there are now 43 borough councillors.

Here are the full set of results. A huge thank you to Ashford Borough Council's media team for their help in pulling these together:
