Despite playing some fine hockey, Ashford received a punishing lesson in finishing from Barnes in a 6-1 defeat on Saturday.

Ashford looked calm and composed in this South Premier Division 2 clash but the home side came forward in large numbers, overloading Ashford’s back line.

Barnes took the lead from a rebound after keeper Keir Starley parried a full-stretch deflection from a Cowling hard-cross.

Another goal followed before the break as Barnes’ approach play pulled the visitors around, and they raced into 6-0 lead after the restart.

Andy Hill scored a lovely reverse stick effort late on but it was a mere consolation.

Milton Keynes visit Ball Lane this week and Ashford could have Chris Smith back in midfield after two months out injured.
