Ashford Town's recent good run came to an end on Saturday, but they remain outside the Ryman League Division 1 South relegation zone with games in hand on the sides below them.
After five wins in seven games, hopes were high in the Nuts and Bolts camp ahead of the visit of Burgess Hill Town, however the Hillians edged the points after a drab affair at Homelands, the only goal arriving four minutes from time.
Tom Murphy (pictured) went closest for Town but pulled his shot wide of target before the break.
Town remain fourth-bottom and three-points clear of joint-bottom Whitstable and Walton Casuals, who both lost.
Folkestone Invicta reignited their hopes of a title challenge after winning 2-1 at second-placed Worthing.
Josh Vincent opened the scoring and after Liam Dickson was sent-off for a second yellow, the hosts levelled six minutes from time, however James Everitt converted a controversial penalty deep into stoppage time to snatch the points.
Invicta lie third, a point behind leaders Croydon, who have two games in hand, but who still have to visit the Buzzlines Stadium.
