Hugo Langton believes it won’t be long before Ashford Town start getting the results their performances deserve.
Striker Paul Jones netted his third goal in two games in the 2-1 defeat at Steve Lovell’s former club Sittingbourne on Tuesday night, their third reverse in four starts leaving them bottom of Ryman League, Division 1 South.
Ross Morley hit the bar in the first half, before Hicham Akhassan put the home side in front. Jones equalised but defender Matt Bourne netted the winner at Bourne Park.
Town assistant manager Langton said: "It’s another game we couldn’t believe we hadn’t won. The effort and the football we played didn’t leave us deserving nothing. The improvement since the 7-0 opening day defeat at Croydon Athletic has been phenomenal."
He added: "We have built a new side and it will take time for people to gel. We are not losing sleep over it, we know we will come good."
Ashford let a 2-0 lead slip late in the game against Godalming on Saturday but Langton defended his players, saying: "We ran out of steam in the last five minutes because they had run themselves into the ground."
Langton has enlisted the help of former colleague and good friend Tony Beckingham to help plan for the visit of Sussex County League Division 1 strugglers, Mile Oak in the FA Cup preliminary round tie at Homelands on Sunday (3pm).
The pair worked together at Holmesdale and Beckingham is now in charge at Lingfield who beat Mile Oak 1-0 last week.
Langton said: "It’s probably their biggest match for sometime and they will want to get at us."
Ashford’s home league game against Whitstable, due for Bank Holiday Monday, will now be played on Wednesday (kick off 7.45pm), unless Sunday’s tie goes to a replay.
