Ashford's Leon Camier believes he is getting closer to a World Superbikes win

Leon Camier is adamant World Superbike round seven proved race wins are within his reach – if he can make sure he flies out of the blocks in the future.

The Ashford rider arrived at round six as the model of inconsistency in the World Superbike paddock – with podium finishes sandwiched between untimely tumbles.

And the weekend in the Spanish sunshine followed an all-too familiar pattern with Camier (pictured) ending race one with a taste of the podium champagne in third, but struggling to eighth in the second.

The 24-year-old looked capable of challenging for the win in the first race of the day, ending the race at the top of the lap time sheets but just running out of time to challenge the leaders.

Camier’s up and down race day was made all the more frustrating with the Aprilia Alitalia rider having qualified on the front row for the first time in his World Superbike career.

But despite his rollercoaster ride in Spain Camier – who now lies fifth in the overall standings - is adamant the signs are positive that he can be challenging the top boys sooner rather than later.

“It was really pleasing to be on the front row because we made some changes after the last round and they worked well,” said Camier, who heads for round eight in the Czech Republic in three weekend’s time.

“It was good to be on the podium in the first race. I just struggled a little bit at the beginning of the race to be honest and hopefully if I can get that right I can be right up there.

“I have to be pleased to be on the podium and I am pleased for the team because everyone worked really hard and it worked out well, especially in the first race.”
