SHOPPERS in Kent are being warned to stay alert so they do not provide rich pickings for pickpockets in the run-up to Christmas.
Police spokesman Rosy Alexander said: "At this time of year, when people are more distracted in the run-up to Christmas shopping, we would say make sure that bags are zipped shut and that you don't put your wallet in your back pocket.
"Just be more aware of your property and that people will be watching you and taking advantage. Make sure you aren't an easy target.
"There always is an increase because people are far more preoccupied and they tend to have more money in their purses. It's rich pickings time, so people should make sure they are a bit more aware and don't become a victim."
Staff at the McArthurGlen designer outlet at Ashford are also preparing to battle the thieves during the festive time. Spokesman Nicola Allen said: "We have had no reports of this nature over the past few months. We have strict measures in place to deter incidents.
"We will be increasing the number of guards on site during Christmas and New Year, as this is one of our busiest trading periods."
