Bogus callers knocked on the door of an elderly couple in Singleton on Sunday lunchtime. Police are trying to trace two men who they think tried to distract a 73-year-old man and his disabled wife by offering to do their gardening and window cleaning.
Just after 12.15pm a man answered the door to his home in Askes Court, off Hoxton Close, near the Singleton Centre. A man, thought to be about 35, with a dirty complexion and wearing a donkey jacket, offered to do jobs for him.
The elderly man heard his wife, who was in the sitting room, challenge someone and saw a man, who was wearing green flowery shorts, leaving through the back door.
He is thought to have come into the house through the open back door. The elderly man spoke to him and he claimed he wanted to look for a lost ball in the garden.
He left through the back garden gate which leads into an alley way, before jumping over a wall that leads into an area of overgrown bushes and trees and a dead end.
The man who knocked at the front door is described as white, aged 35, 5’6” tall, slight build, untidy dark brown hair, dirty complexion and a southern accent. He was wearing a dark brown coloured 'donkey’ type jacket and glasses.
The second man, who entered the house, is described as white, aged 30, stocky build, short fair hair, wearing green flowery summer shorts and a dirty looking white short sleeved T shirt.
