Bolt sculpture unlocks town's 'shared space' scheme

The crowning glory of Ashford’s ring road works is now in place.

The bolt sculpture at the corner of the West Sreeet/Elwick Road junction has been designed by award-winning artist John Atkin.

The shared space element of the road works has re-opened to two-way traffic and includes the area running from Station Road/Elwick Road junction to West Street.

Traffic has now reverted to accessing and exiting Godinton Road as before the works started.

The bolt is made out of COR-TEN Steel which means it self-rust, leaving a protection of the steel that will never require painting.

The COR-TEN is also proposed for use as a cladding material on a series of low retaining walls which form a cascading terraced area along the frontage of the new Affinity Homes development.

The terraces were laid out in a sequence of overlapping shapes, developed by John Atkin and derived from the palette of shapes and forms evident in the street funtiture and the floorspace around the bolt.

A completion ceremony is expected to held later in the month.
