A man from Ashford has told how he urged two children to stop playing on a dangerous iced-over pond.

The incident took place in Little Burton, on the water behind Ashford Rugby Club.

Its follows a series of ice warnings due to the adverse weather and freezing fog this week.

Andy Clark, 54, said: “There were two young boys around about 10-years-old at the most.

“I tried to explain the what would happen if they fell through the ice.”

Mr Clark said that the children were around 9 to 10 ft out on the ice. It is believed that there were no adults supervising them.

In addition, the lifebuoy for the lake had been previously been thrown to the middle of the lake, meaning if someone drowned, there would be no immediate way access to them.

Mr Clark continued: “They weren’t bothered originally.

“After a few minutes I managed to persuade them to come off.

“There was a couple of dog walkers who said they had seen other kids on the lake as well.”

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon around 3pm.

It comes after youngsters were spotted playing on thin ice at Haysden Park in Tonbridge at the weekend.

The freezing fog is expected to slowly thin and lift during the day today, although it may persist in some areas throughout the day.
