A terminally ill mum is one step closer to going on her dream family holiday after her friends launched a fundraising campaign.

Maggie Lendrum, who has been battling cancer for several years, was recently told her tumours have returned and formed a 'spider web' across her brain.

But friends have now raised more than £1,000 for the 54-year-old and her family to go on their first trip away in eight years.

Mrs Lendrum, who has two teenage children, will undergo further treatment to increase her life expectancy.

She said: "I know I'm not going to see my children grow up or get married and have children.

"I haven't been away since 2010 and my son Adam has never been on an aeroplane - it would be nice to make memories with the children.

"I'm just amazed by people's generosity, I keep thinking that there are others worse off as I know I've still got some time left."

Mrs Lendrum, who had worked with disadvantaged children at an after school club, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

She was later rushed to King's College Hospital in London, where it was discovered she had a brain tumour and an inoperable tumour in her liver.

The brain tumour was removed and Mrs Lendrum, of Belmont Road, Newtown, returned home with her husband Dave and two children, Adam, 16 and Abbie, 19.

But last month, a scan revealed the tumours had returned and that she had developed leptomeningeal metastases - a rare complication of cancer in which the disease spreads to the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Her condition is not curable but Mrs Lendrum has started treatment to extend and improve her quality of life.

So far, the fundraising page has raised £1,370 for the family.

Friend Anne Bowie-Wooler, who has known Mrs Lendrum for 14 years, said: "There were lots of tears when we found out the news, but we just want to get a holiday and Christmas organised for her and her family.

"She has been so positive all the way through and she wants to do something with the kids and make happy memories with them."
