A 39-year-old motorist has appeared in court accused of causing death by dangerous driving following a two-car crash.

The crash happened between junctions 10 and 11 of the M20 at Ashford at about 6.30am on Wednesday, October 19.

A white Opel and a red Vauxhall Astra were travelling coastbound when they collided, resulting in the Opel hitting the central reservation.

A passenger in the Opel, a 32-year-old man from Holland, was thrown from the car, and died of his injuries at Ashford's William Harvey Hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning. The driver of the Opel was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He is Ahmed Kariye, from Holland, who appeared at Ashford Magistrates' Court where he was remanded in custody. He will appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday, November 4.

Kent Police's Serious Crash Investigation Unit (SCIU) is appealing for witnesses to the crash. Sgt Julian Barton said: “We would particularly like to speak to a lorry driver who we believe witnessed the incident, and will have valuable information.

"We are appealing for any drivers who were on that stretch of the motorway at the time of the collision to contact our witness line. What they saw will help to build up a picture of the incident.”
